Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar has used his popularity to lend support to UNICEF campaigns in his home country. In 2010, he was also appointed as a UNEP Goodwill Ambassador and participated in the 2012 Earth Hour Challenge.
Tendulkar has been a strong supporter of the work of the UN, having lent his voice to a UNICEF campaign in India, raising awareness about the importance of personal hygiene. He said of his Goodwill Ambassador appointment; “Being part of the effort to save the planet is an immense undertaking but it is a challenge I am ready to undertake. Working with UNEP and cricket fans across the globe, I am in good company.”
As the face of WWF-India’s 2012 Earth Hour campaign, he encouraged individuals, organizations, institutions and groups to be a part of the largest global environmental movement in history by switching their lights off for Earth Hour.
Tendulkar raised Rs 10.25 million for cancer-affected children in just two weeks, posting an appeal on Twitter as “Sachin’s Crusade Against Cancer in Children”. The event was organized by the Crusade Against Cancer Foundation.
Each year, Tendulkar sponsors the education of 200 children by NGO Apnalaya as a part of the ‘Joy of Giving Week’ campaign,” supporting the programme conceptualised by GiveIndia, to promote charitable donations.
