Seacourt

Multi-award winning Oxford printing house Seacourt is renowned for its radical approach to the environment.  Over the last 14 years, it has gone from being a standard dirty printer to become the first closed loop, zero waste company in its industry worldwide.

Quoted as being “One of the top three leading environmental printers in the world” by a worldwide printing association, they have gone on to win the Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development twice in the period of 4 years.

Seacourt will soon be celebrating its 65th birthday, but its environmental journey began 14 years ago when Chairman, Jim Dinnage, heard about a new waterless printing technology, along with the facts and figures about the print industry, how it was the fifth largest and the 6th worst polluting worldwide. This led to a complete U turn in strategy and a bold decision to invest in brand new innovational waterless lithographic printing presses.

Since then, one of the first companies to win EMAS and ISO14001 accreditations, Seacourt has gone on to win major national and international awards for their business, often quoted as a model of best practice.

They now have official accreditation for zero-waste status.  Since October 2009, Seacourt have had no bin collections.  Throughout the entire manufacturing process, there is not one waste stream which is not being re-used or recycled in some way. Given the sheer volume of resources used by the company, for example 273 tonnes of annual paper usage, this is no mean feat. The company has its own wormery and fertilizer produced from this is often given to customers for their gardening requirements!

“Sustainable development is primarily about integrating sustainable values into your company philosophy, being passionate and creative in what you do, and not about creating some kind of tick-list.  Sustainability should be a cornerstone value and not some kind of “bolt-on”.   We are delighted to support the International Green Awards which recognize organic and dynamic developments in sustainable practice.”
Jim Dinnage, Chairman, Seacourt

The company’s recent win of a second Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development was indeed due in large part to their zero-waste status.  In recognition of the achievement, HRH Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, visited the offices to present the award himself, meeting staff and longstanding loyal customers of the company.

To its recognition, Seacourt has received numerous public commendations from such prominent names such as Jonathon Porritt, Chris Huhne and Sir Michael Meacher for achievements in sustainable development and in setting an example of best practice.
