Yealands Estate is New Zealand’s leading environmentally sustainable winery based in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough. Developed by entrepreneur Peter Yealands, the privately owned winery features advanced green technology in every aspect of design and function.
With CarboNZerocert™ certification since inception, Yealands Estate is the largest winery in New Zealand to achieve this status for its organisation and wine products. The winery and vineyard is also accredited under Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and has pioneered a range of green initiatives including; solar panels and insulation, harvesting storm water to irrigate the vineyards around the winery, harnessing vine prunings and wind-power to deliver power to the winery and reduce fuel usage, the introduction of miniature “baby doll” sheep for weed and grass management, and developing more than 25 wetland areas to preserve native species and attract native birds.
Yealands Estate wines come from their Seaview Vineyard. This vineyard area enjoys the longest ripening period in the region due to a unique combination of climatic factors including low rainfall, high sunshine hours, strong off-shore winds and no frosts, resulting in grapes with highly concentrated, intense flavours. Grown in some of Marlborough’s harshest growing conditions and nurtured with low impact sustainable methods, Yealands Estate wines are crafted to capture pure varietal characters. They burst with intense flavours and distinctive complexity and have accordingly received numerous international awards since their inaugural release, which goes to show that being green also means making a great drop.
So good are the Yealands Estate wines that their Single Block Sauvignon Blanc has been awarded the title of the World’s Best Sauvignon Blanc at the International Wine Challenge, 2012.
